EKG Q&A

What is an EKG?

An electrocardiogram (EKG) test evaluates your heart’s electrical activity. EKGs are noninvasive and painless. Sacramento Heart & Vascular Medical Associates performs EKGs, echocardiograms, and other diagnostic procedures on-site in their four Sacramento-area offices.

How does the EKG process work?

Before an EKG, the Sacramento Heart & Vascular Medical Associates team attaches small electrodes to your chest, arms, and legs. The electrodes record your heart’s electrical activity, translating it into line patterns for the team to interpret.

Some EKGs simply involve remaining still for around 10 minutes. Stress EKGs involve exercising on a treadmill or stationary bike, allowing the medical team to see how your heart responds to stress.

After an EKG, the team evaluates the readout for patterns that may indicate heart disease or other problems.

What problems can an EKG diagnose?

An EKG can diagnose issues such as:

  • Previous heart attack
  • Coronary artery disease (the most common type of heart disease)
  • Heart arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat)
  • Heart defects
  • Heart valve problems
  • Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (abnormal heart muscle thickening)

EKGs are also used for other purposes, such as evaluating the effectiveness of your pacemaker or evaluating heart health before a scheduled procedure like a valve replacement.

How do I prepare for an EKG?

In general, you don’t need to do anything to prepare for an EKG. You’ll review all your current medications and supplements with the team ahead of the procedure, as some drugs or natural substances can influence the results of an EKG.

It’s best to avoid wearing any lotions or body oils, especially on your chest, arms, and legs, as this can prevent the electrodes from adhering properly.

If you’re having a stress EKG, you might have to fast before the test, and the team may tell you not to drink coffee or other caffeine. If you use an inhaler or other breathing apparatus, bring it to your stress EKG appointment. You might need to use it following your EKG.

Your EKG provides crucial information about your heart, so it’s important in diagnosis and treatment planning. To schedule your EKG at Sacramento Heart & Vascular Medical Associates, call the office nearest you or book your appointment online today.
